For a number of years, I lived in the southeast part of Houston with my wife, Donna (KB5BAN), and children and worked as a carpenter. In 1974 I began talking on the Citizen Band Radio. My license was KYX1531 and I was known as Woodbutcher. In 1980, after getting caught up in ham radio, I decided along with KA5VJB (Bill) and N5IGF (Jerry) to get my novice ham ticket and was issued the ham call of KA5VMC.

I upgraded to technician class at the San Jacinto Junior College in Pasadena, TX in 1984. At that time, I talked on a Kenwood 9000 that I would take from the truck into the house and hook to a battery and a vertical ground plane for 2 meters. I called this my "bailing wire base." I erected my first tower, a 50 ft Rohn with a Cushcraft J-poll vertical antenna, in 1986. Since FM didn't work out well for me, I switched to SSB where I've talked ever since. Soon after, I got a Kenwood 711 and 811. 

After moving to Spring, Texas in 1989, I erected a 50 ft Rohn lay-over tower with a pair of Cushcraft 17B2s. In 1990 I was grandfathered from technician to general class operator and in February 1998 I changed my call to K5DDD.

In the Spring of 2006, I modified my antenna system to a pair of 36'6" long 19 element Yagis. At the present time, I have a 756 Pro 3 HF radio and 746 Pro 2 meter radio. My mobile radio is a 706 Mark IIG Icom.

I've always enjoyed fooling around with antennas and I build full wave loop antennas for several different bands that are very effective as omni-directionally mobile or monitoring antennas.
